While in Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, I decided to write a children’s illustration book, something that was designed to put me totally outside my comfort zone.Having an idea and turning it into a book is literally as hard as it sounds. The experience is both challenging and rewarding for me as a writer. My storyline goal was to touch on the environment seen and experienced through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy from Paris, which I hope is both fun and thought provoking, and above all relevant.I was encouraged by my copy editor in New York to increase the word count from 3000 to over 6000 to match other children’s books for this age group. This was difficult, and as a consequence, I introduced an 11-year-old boy as the main protagonist.I commissioned a really talented illustrator and gave him a detailed brief at every stage of the book as to what I wanted drawn. To get the book formatted and put together for print and digital download, I would like to thank one of Reading University’s brave students, Joanne, and her lecturer who took on the project.Now the book is finished, my goal was to promote it as much as possible, because all of the profits from the sale were going to two really good charities: the Heads Up supporting mental health and The WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) supporting wildlife and the welfare of our planet, which are supported by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.I am proud of my achievement and hope that children aged 5 to 10 and their parents will enjoy the book and that it will sell a lot of copies and financially support the two charities.
